Debit card holder? Don't exhaust ATM transaction limit, or you will pay these charges; what SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank levy

These days debit cards not only just gives you cash, but also access to a host of other freebies and offers.

Debit cards have become an important part of the banking system and transactions carried out on bank ATMs using debit cards are growing rapidly. Using these cards, the customers can not only take out their money but are also given access to many freebies and offers. However, like every other service, debit cards too come at a cost. Major lenders like State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank levy certain charges on debit card transactions beyond a fixed number of transactions. Here is the list of charges levied by largest lenders like SBI, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank:

SBI:

Transactions at SBI ATMs are free.

ATM transactions made at other Bank ATMs, up to 5 Transactions during a calendar month (for savings bank account only) are free. If the customers exhaust this limit, charges are levied.

For financial transactions, the customers need to pay Rs Rs 17(including service tax) and for non-financial transactions, the charge levied is Rs 6 (including service tax).

For international transactions - Rs 17 including tax is charged on balance enquiry, whereas Rs 169 including taxes are levied on ATM Cash withdrawal transactions.

HDFC Bank:

Balance enquiry and cash withdrawal is free on ATM transaction made at HDFC Bank machine. Balance enquiry service is also free on other bank ATMs. However, up to 5 free cash withdrawal transaction per month at Non-HDFC Bank ATM is given.If this limit is exhausted, then additional transaction done at Non-HDFC Bank ATM will be charged at Rs 20 per transaction (Per transaction limit will be Rs 10,000/-).

For international customers - there is Rs 15 charge on balance enquiry and Rs 110 charge on per cash withdrawal.

There is Rs 25 per transaction (plus taxes) for transactions declined at other Bank ATMs anywhere in the world or at a Merchant outlet outside India.

ICICI Bank:

Just like SBI, HDFC Bank, there are no charges on ATM services carried out at ICICI Bank outlet. However, first 5 transactions in a month (inclusive of financial and non financial) are free.

Thereafter, Rs.20 per financial transaction and Rs. 8.50 per non financial transaction is charged.

It is important to be aware of ATM limits if the customers do not want to pay extra charges while carrying out transactions. In the first half of FY19, debit card usage at bank ATMs has already reached 798.65 million transactions worth Rs 2,690.60 billion as on September, 2018. This simply points to the fact how deep is the need for a debit card in a person's life.
