Top selling cars in India 2018: India has turned into a major car-dependent nation and sales are humming. The biggest transformation that is happening is the movement away from the entry-level cars and this has caused a major surprise. And what is that? In the 10 top selling cars list in April 2018, Maruti Suzuki's most popular hatchback has slipped to the third position. The small hatchback could sell 21,233 units in April 2018, witnessing a dip of 6 per cent in the sales, compared to 22,549 units in the same month last year. Photo: Reuters

The recently-launched Maruti Suzuki Swift has replaced Alto and gained the top position, selling 22,776 units in April 2018. The Maruti Swift had also replaced the Alto in the same month last year. Maruti Suzuki Swift has emerged as the one of the best-selling hatchbacks in the country, as the car's refreshed design and new features have recently got more attention. With the latest generation on the offer, Swift has also become one of the fastest cars to clock one lakh bookings in the shortest time — just a little over two months after the launch — trumping the compact sedan stablemate Dzire, which had touched the milestone in 12-14 weeks, said an Economic Times report. Maruti Suzuki's compact sedan Dzire pulled off a massive surprise as it grabbed the second position in the list with 21,401 units. Dzire witnessed a  fall in sales last year as the carmaker planned a new model launch in the month of May. The auto major could sell merely 8,606 units of Dzire's outgoing model, which was later renamed as the Dzire Tour S. Photo: Reuters

Maruti Suzuki Baleno, which was at the third position with 17,530 units last year in the same month, has dropped to the fourth position with 20,412 units. It was followed by Wagon R with a total sale of 16,561 units. Photo: Reuters

The top 5 slots were grabbed by Maruti Suzuki India, the country’s second-largest carmaker. The next best was Hyundai Motor India, which claimed the 6th, 7th and 10th positions with the Elite i20, the Grand i10, and the Creta, respectively. Photo: PTI

Significantly, the 8th and 9th positions have also been hogged by Maruti Suzuki with Vitara Brezza and the Celerio, respectively. Clearly, the other carmakers are not being able to roll out cars that appeal to the mass buyers and are left fighting for the also-ran positions. Photo: Reuters
