Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced compensation to the families that have suffered loss of family members due to the COVID-19 pandemic on Tuesday.
Delhi COVID News Update Today: The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has been a huge blow for the country, many have lost their near and dear ones. On May 18, the Union Health Ministry informed that in the last 24 hours, the country has witnessed 2,63,533 fresh COVID-19 infections with 4,329 COVID-19 related deaths. Amidst this situation, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced compensation to the families that have suffered loss of family members due to the COVID-19 pandemic on Tuesday.

The Delhi Chief Minister said in a statement, "Every family that has had a death due to COVID-19 among them, will be given Rs 50,000 each as ex-gratia." There have been many cases where several children have been left orphan by the COVID-19 pandemic. Kejriwal made some important announcements for them as well. He stated that the children who have lost both their parents either because of COVID-19 or in case one of the parents were dead and the other succumbed to COVID-19, will be given a monthly pension of Rs 2500 till they attain 25 years of age. The Delhi Chief Minister also added that these children will be provided education free of cost. Kejriwal has also tweeted about these decisions from his official Twitter handle.

The Delhi chief minister further added that in case of the families where the breadwinner died, they will be given Rs 2500 monthly pension besides ex-gratia. He stated, “If husband dies, pension will be given to the wife, if wife dies, it will be given to the husband. If an unmarried person dies, the pension will be given to his/her parents."
On Sunday, Kejriwal announced the lockdown in the union territory till May 24, 2021. The lockdown was imposed in the national capital since April 19 because of the spike in the number of COVID-19 cases. As per an ANI report, on May 18, the national capital has continued to see a drop in the number of COVID-19 cases with the city witnessing 4482 new COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours.
