Covid 19 meeting : Remain alert, promote corona appropriate behaviour, says PM Modi; asks states to lower VAT on petrol, diesel

In order to provide relief to the people from the fuel price hike, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called upon opposition-ruled states to follow the Centre`s decision by reducing taxes on petrol and diesel.

The central government reduced the excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10 respectively in November 2021 to decrease the burden of rising petrol and diesel prices.

“We had urged the states too to reduce their taxes. Some states reduced the tax and provided benefits to the consumers but some didn`t do so, said PM Modi, during a virtual meeting on Covid-19 with chief ministers.

PM Modi, naming opposition parties ruled states said, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu did not follow the advice of the Central Government and people in these states are burdened with price rises.

Following the center`s decision, most states, mostly ruled by BJP or their allies had reduced VAT on petrol and diesel to give relief to consumers.

“I request these states to do now what they should have done in November. By reducing the VAT you can lower the burden faced by the residents,” the prime minister said.

PM Modi made the following comments during his interactions with Chief Ministers of several states over rising cases of COVID-19.

Stating that the threat of COVID-19 is not fully gone yet, the prime minister at a meeting with chief ministers said, “We need to remain alert, and promote Covid-appropriate behaviour in public places.”

“It is a matter of pride for every Indian that 96 per cent of the adult population in the country has got at least one dose of Covid vaccine,” PM Modi said, adding further that administering the vaccine to every eligible child at the earliest is our priority.
