Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) provides various online services and facilities to its subscribers. One such online facility that EPFO provides EPF subscribers is access to the statement of contributions in respective EPF accounts. A subscriber can get to access his/her EPF passbook from the EPFO's online member portal i.e epfindia.gov.in. In an EPF account, the employee and employer contributes 12 per cent each of the pay (basic salary, dearness allowance and retaining allowance) towards the account. The employer's contribution equal to 12 per cent of the subscriber's pay is further divided into two parts. The amount equal to 8.33 per cent is diverted to the pension fund, while the remaining 3.67 per cent goes to the EPF account.
The EPF money is a government secured and backed fund and the interest earned is tax-free as per laws. An employee enjoys the EEE (exempt-exempt-exempt) status on his/her EPF earnings. The employee’s contribution is tax-deductible under the Section 80C of the Income Tax Act.
