Smartphone buyers prefer chipset from MediaTek, Qualcomm and Apple: Report
The survey - which was conducted across the top six cities of India, namely, New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad - also found that 83 per cent of users plan to consider a 5G-enabled smartphone for their next purchase.
Smartphone buyers are more aware than ever before and they clearly know what they are going to pay for. Also, the one thing that buyers give a lot of preference when buying a smartphone is the chipset. According to a report by CyberMedia Research (CMR) 81 per cent of Indian smartphone users are aware of the importance of chipsets in smartphones.
"This awareness extends beyond just tech-savvy individuals, indicating a broader understanding of the importance of chipsets among Indian smartphone users," the report said.
Most popular chipset brands
The consumer survey from CyberMedia Research (CMR) also found that there are three brands which are on the top of the preference list of smartphone buyers. Among the top three are MediaTek, Qualcomm and Apple with each receiving a ranking score of 58 out of 100.

"The primary reason for users' preference towards these brands is their reputation for delivering enhanced overall device performance, as well as gaming and imaging experience," the report said.
According to Surachita Deb Sharma, Analyst-Industry Consulting Group (ICG), CyberMedia Research (CMR), there is a growing recognition among consumers that the smartphone chipset is crucial in driving these experiences.
The report also suggests that MediaTek has experienced notable growth in terms of market share. MediaTek captured a significant 48 per cent share of the smartphone market in the first quarter of 2023. This can be attributed to the increase in consumer awareness and interest. For instance, around 72 per cent of consumers know that MediaTek powers various smart devices.

The survey - which was conducted across the top six cities of India, namely, New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad - also found that 83 per cent of users plan to consider a 5G-enabled smartphone for their next purchase.
Here are some other findings of the survey:
- Currently, 31% of smartphone users surveyed own a 5G-capable smartphone.
- Around 6 in 7 smartphone users utilize their smartphones for content creation.
- When capturing videos or photos, fast uploading (71 per cent) is considered the most important aspect, followed by enhanced storage capacity (67 per cent) and a fast network connection (65 per cent).
- Around 5 in 6 smartphone users play games on their smartphones for stress relief (44 per cent) and leisure (41 per cent ), and, often immersing themselves in another character (26 per cent).
- Sports games are the most preferred (53 per cent), followed by action/adventure games (51 per cent) among gamers.
- Battery life is crucial for seven out of eight gamers when playing games on their smartphones.
