The 30-share BSE Sensex fell 262.96 points or 0.44 per cent to settle at 59,456.78. During the day, it tanked 444.34 points or 0.74 per cent to 59,275.40. The NSE Nifty went lower by 97.90 points or 0.55 per cent to end at 17,718.35.

The BSE Sensex rose by 579 points or 0.98 per cent to 59,720 and Nifty50 settled 194 points or 1.1 per cent higher to 17,816.
The BSE Sensex closed at 59,719.74, up by 578.51 points or 0.98 per cent while the 50-share Nifty index settled at 17,816.25, gaining 194 points or 1.1 per cent.
Bharti Airtel, ITC, and Maruti shares surged between 1-2 per cent to hit their respective 52-week highs of Rs 795.2, Rs 339.6 and Rs 9430 apiece on the NSE intraday.

The benchmark showed resilience in the initial sessions however the fear of aggressive rate hikes and selling by the foreign investors dented sentiments in final trades, Ajit Mishra, VP - Research, Religare Broking said in his note on market last week.
“As far as support is concerned, 17400 is seen as a key support,” the brokerage said, adding that the moment we see the Nifty sliding below it, correction in the index may get extended.
