Dahi Handi 2022 date: History and importance | Krishna Janmashtami

Janmashtami is observed on the 8th day of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month of the Hindu calendar.

Dahi Handi 2022: Dahi Handi is associated with Krishna Janmashtami festival. This year's Dahi Handi is special as it i being celebrated after two years due to the pandemic. Dahi Handi is celebrated all over the country with major attractions being in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra. Dahi Handi celebrations involve govindas (often young men and boys) making a human pyramid and attempt to reach a height to break a pot filled with dahi and butter.

Dahi Handi is celebrated on a large scale in Maharashtra and especially in Mumbai. This year, Dahi Handi will be celebrated on August 19 in Maharashtra. The celebrations were organised in few towns on Thursday (August 18) as well.

The history of Dahi Handhi dates back to a long time. In Hindu scriptures, it is said that Lord Krishna during his childhood days used to make human pyramids with friends to break pots hung from the ceilings.

Janmashtami is observed on the 8th day of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month of the Hindu calendar. Lord Krishna's followers believe that it was on this day he was born.

Until now, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) used to have the public holiday on this day but Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that the government is considering to make this day a holiday across the state. In Mumbai alone, more than 5,000 Dahi Handi events are organised every year.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that the government has decided to accord adventure sport status to Dahi Handi. The adventure sport tag will allow young participants of Dahi Handi events to apply for government jobs under the sports quota.
