Happy Lohri 2023: Lohri is a popular Indian festival celebrated just before Makar Sankranti every year. It is mainly celebrated in the northern part of the country — especially in Punjab, Jammu region and Himachal Pradesh. This year, the festival is being observed on January 14.

Also known as Lohadi or Lal Loi, Lohri marks the beginning of the harvest season. People light bonfires, wear new clothes, exchange gifts, eat jaggery, sugarcane, til, popcorn and other festive sweets on this festival.

The festival of Lohri symbolises the lengthening of daylight after the winter solstice. According to folklore, in ancient times, Lohri was traditionally celebrated at the end of the traditional month, when the winter solstice occurred.

There is a lot of confusion regarding the exact date of Lohri this year. While some believe that the festival will fall on January 13, others believe that it will be celebrated on January 14. However, according to Drikpanchang, the festival will fall on January 14 this year, and Makar Sankranti will be celebrated on January 15.

Lohri Prasad Rituals
During the evening rituals, various kinds of food items are offered to the Lohri fire to seek blessings, prosperity and happiness from the almighty. However, the traditional Lohri Prasad consists of five food items - Til (sesame seeds), Gajak (a sweet preparation), Gur (jaggery), Moongphali (peanuts) and Phuliya (popcorn).
