National Unity Day 2022: National Unity Day or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas is observed on October 31 every year. The day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who served as the first Home Minister of India after Independence. Patel is also known as the 'The Iron Man of India' for his efforts for the unification of over 550 princely states. This year marks the 147th anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The day was first celebrated in 2014. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in 2014 declared that Patel's birth anniversary will be observed as National Unity Day. The idea behind National Unity Day is to make people aware of the strength of staying together.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. PM Modi also took part in National Unity Day programme at the Statue of Unity in Kevadiya in Narmada district of Gujarat.

Statue Of Unity is dedicated to Patel. It was inaugurated in 2018. It is the world’s tallest Statue of Unity, with a height of 182 meters. The statue symbolises national, spiritual, historical and academic value.
